The Free Society of Satanists is the third local group to join “Global Order of Satan,” the Europe-centered Satanic organization founded in June 2018 as one of many splinter factions breaking away from The Satanic Temple in that year.
The co-founder of the FSS, who uses the pseudonym “Jack Violently”, said in a blog post announcing the official changeover that, as GOS: Resurgens, the group will continue to represent Southeastern America as they always have, including being their “Anarchist Satanic selves”.
“All of us at The Free Society are excited to grab 2025 by the Devil Horns and expand our benevolent mission of fighting alongside the tyrannized and oppressed of society!” Violently wrote.
A non-theistic Satanist group, Global Order of Satan grew out of the international footprint of the Salem, Mass.-based Satanic Temple, which had been founded in 2012.
In a 2020 Medium article, then-co-Order head of GOS United Kingdom “Andy Diabolus” described issues of persistent neglect from TST’s “National Council” intermixed with occasions of iron-fisted rule from TST’s US-centric owners. After TST UK had one of its chapter heads unilaterally thrown out of the org by Salem in 2018, Diabolus relates, the chapters for the United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Israel all exited TST jointly to create what would become “Global Order of Satan”.
Subsequent waves of autocratic behavior by and unsavory histories coming to light of The Satanic Temple’s owners Doug Misicko (“Lucien Greaves”) and Cevin Soling (“Malcolm Jarry”) caused fresh departures by TST members and groups, particularly in 2023 and 2024.
GOS philosophically organizes around principles called “six pillars“:
- Self-fulfilment and personal understanding allow us to support ourselves and therefore others.
- Respect the inviolable body, autonomous will, and sovereign right of every individual to guide their own life and being; remembering that enjoyment of these rights is predicated on respect for the same in others.
- Science, evidence, reason, and critical thinking should guide our beliefs about our universe. Truly critical thinking can only be achieved by challenging your own preconceptions and opinions, providing a more balanced outlook to help us make better informed decisions.
- Act with empathy, compassion, and wisdom towards yourself and others.
- Justice always takes precedence over laws, institutions, and religious texts, as long as the pursuit of it does not countermand the pillars.
- All people make mistakes. Allow them to correct those mistakes, as we seek acceptance in others over our own.
The Free Society of Satanists grew out of former members disenchanted with the hierarchical structures and ‘devil’s advocate’ priorities of TST and a separate, Pennsylvania-based independent Satanic organization that previously organized itself around the Temple’s Seven Tenets. At present, FSS organizes itself around its own “9 Principles“.
- You are your own master, and shall live life according to your own will alone.
- Show compassion and respect to yourself first, and others second. If someone exploits your compassion, rescind it.
- Logic and reason shall always prevail over superstition and dogma.
- Respect others’ boundaries lest yours be trampled underfoot.
- Strive to live each day as your most authentic self.
- Indulge without excess. Do what thou wilt, as long as it brings harm to no one else.
- Treat nature and her environs with the utmost respect.
- If you wrong someone, acknowledge your mistake and work to ensure it won’t be repeated.
- Never Proselytize. If asked questions, answer them. Otherwise, let others discover the path for themselves.
As a U.S. Satanic groups deciding to affiliate with GOS, the FSS follows in the path of Pittsburgh, which in November 2023 joined as “Steel City”; and Seattle/Puget Sound, which in in June 2024 joined as as “House of Heretics”. Additionally, “GOS-Steel City Inc” and “House of Heretics” are registered nonprofit corporations in Pennsylvania and Washington State, respectively; FSS is at present a collective without any associated legal entity.
TST sued us from April 2020 to September 2024, and we are still here.
