A better world is possible — but not by following the rules

“If those Jan. 6 protesters had been Black, they wouldn’t have been treated so kindly like that by cops” — we know.

Yes, it’s important to have that realization, but even Joe Biden is saying it out loud now. It’s time to move beyond pointing out hypocrisy for its own sake.

In the words of a different comrade “I just want anyone on my side to, like, want to win instead of trying to get the other team red-carded by a referee that doesn’t exist”.

One of the ways to do that is to act within the world as it really is, to not follow the arbitrary rules that tell you “don’t be uncivil”, “don’t be trashy”, “respect authority even if you don’t agree with it”, “true patriotism is…”

These are euphemisms and superstitions. This system is not fair and cannot be fair because if it were so billionaires would not exist, land and wealth seized by violence then privatized could not be inherited then defended with more state violence.

There will be more, and it will be worse. Tiny rebellious actions like graffiti and providing food to others in the name of justice are a form of asserting and reminding yourself of your freedom. Some will remind others of their freedom, and all actions should stretch the resources of the oppressors, exhaust, and frustrate them.

“The justice system is unjust” — we know. But the state is an egregore that can be vanquished with collective thought and action, too.
