The charity of evangelical Christians is, like everything else, based on their worship of power.
This is why these same Christians who will reach into their own pocket to provide a destitute person with food, drink — even provide them cash without condition — will still refuse and actively fight efforts to ensure that such people are protected from falling into destitution or guaranteed basic dignity and material support by default.
“We need to give people a hand-up, not a hand-out” — in fact, just the opposite. Evangelicals prefer handouts because those always can be removed if the person receiving it behaves rudely, is insufficiently deferent, or perhaps begins to threaten to become an independent peer. Imagine what might become of all that Christian charity and humility if a person who is supposed to be receiving help tried to organize the actual inhabitants of a shelter or soup kitchen to have some say in its conditions. The point is not for the lesser person to grow to become self-sufficient and assert themselves to no longer need charity. The point is to maintain power over a vulnerable person who will always need to come begging.
Hence, scaled up to nations, also the Christian and secular nonprofit industries around the globe. “Free clothes”— but not a free clothing-industry under the laborers’ own control. “Free food” — but not to feed one’s own community outside of the global marketplace. “Free medicine” — but only while home-country budgets and good will lasts. Etc.
It is critical that these individually impoverished people and nations continue to worship the twin gods of the white Christ and white capital and critical that they be kept in such a powerless condition that they can be swiftly punished if they turn away to some heresy like “local sovereignty and autonomy”.
Because these lesser people cannot be trusted to act according to their proper station of their free will, good Christians (and capitalists) will have to keep the most desperate inferiors and others watching them always threatened on the edge of utter ruin so that the worship extracted from them never stops.
Their charity will help set and mend your broken leg, sure, but if you get too good at limping, rest assured, they will break the other one to keep you in your place.
