Whether arson is violence or pacifism depends entirely on what’s being burned

Construction is not more valuable than destruction when what’s being built is a concentration camp; the maintenance of a prison factory is not a neutral act just because it preserves the status quo.

When colonized and enslaved people set fires to homes of their overseers, broke the equipment for mining or sugar processing, and killed to liberate or otherwise defend themselves, these were acts of pacifism intended to make a peace out of the violence being forced on them.

“But who decides what’s good and bad then?” We all do. All of us, together. And we don’t just pretend that there is peace and plenty by saying some of the people’s suffering doesn’t count.
