AI and AM versus FM technology

It is really important to be able to spot the difference between AM versus FM technology, particularly when it comes to their promises. Actual Machine (AM) technology involves a lot of well-understood costs & challenges. It’s usually not very exciting. The solutions offered are quite obvious. Example: How do we lower traffic fatalities and provide […]

Tumblr @danshive In science fiction, AIs tend to malfunction due to some technicality of logic, such as that business with the laws of robotics and an AI reaching a dramatic, ironic conclusion. Content regulation algorithms tell me that sci-fi authors are overly generous in these depictions. “Why did cop bot arrest that nice elderly woman?” “It insists she’s the mafia.” “It thinks she’s in the mafia?” “No. It thinks she’s an entire crime family. It filled out paperwork for multiple separate arrests after bringing her in.”

White supremacy and white victimhood

Rightfully, liberals find it very easy to notice (and laugh at) conservatives when they utilize slave imagery or yellow stars to compare themselves to persecuted Jewish people before and during the Shoah — particularly for such things as haircuts or mask-wearing during a deadly pandemic. But the desire to cosplay as victims of one sort […]

X-Boxes, insulin, and woo

There is a 30-year gap in the life expectancies of Black and white Chicagoans depending on their ZIP code. On average, residents of the Streeterville neighborhood, which is 73% white, live to be 90 years old. Nine miles south, the residents of Englewood, which is nearly 95% Black, have a life expectancy of 60. Journalist […]

Cultural Christianity and anti-theists

You don’t believe in a god. Neat. That wasn’t really the problem, though, was it? Imagine Sam Harris or Richard Dawkins weighing in on a social issue, or how YouTube atheists feel about feminism, intersectionality, or structural racism. If you’ve never heard the term “cultural Christian”, that’s the sort of thing we’re talking about. They […]

Racism and the Pacific Northwest

If you identify who’s in these photos and were in those “social clubs” at the time, their families today prolly still own the farmland, still call themselves “farmers” while exploiting the actual farmworkers or “blue collar” while managing a franchise restaurant or car dealership. Today, their descendants prolly still complain about immigrants and socialists all […]

It’s time to start counting chickens

@bonecouch: “but without the profit motive people won’t work” [Archive] We need to talk about how cities will have to re-orient our infrastructure around community agriculture and animal husbandry, incorporating the knowledge that many immigrant groups and the poorest rural people already have. As it is, our food comes from far away, is produced at […]

Tumblr @deadmomjokes Y’all, I’m over here DYING cuz Google suggested me this article about the crisis of backyard chicken keepers– which is that they love having chickens so much that they keep getting more, and then don’t know what to do with all the eggs. Which I can see how this would be a problem, but it’s just so funny to me because they had interviewed this one guy who started off with 3 chickens, and then kept adding more and more, and eventually started donating the eggs to a local food bank, and at the end of the year when they wrote him a tax receipt, he discovered he’d donated over 400 dozen eggs. Seriously, it was a whole article talking very seriously about how people are so into chickens that they just keep collecting them like pokemon and then have to “scramble” (their words not mine) to get rid of the eggs, because they weren’t even thinking of egg production, they just loved having chickens. And while I may be over here laughing a bit too hard, honestly? Big Mood. @bonecouch “but without the profit motive people won’t work”

Ableism isn’t a form of ignorance

Ableism isn’t something that results from a lack of education but how disability and disabled people are fundamentally viewed within a society. There is no technological development that can come about that will fix a structure that views you as subhuman. Capitalism can’t contribute to accessibility because capitalism makes access to products dependent on wealth; […]

You really are not immune to propaganda

“You are not immune to propaganda” is an extraordinarily important thing to grasp about the world and your place in it. Because if you notice, the problem with SHIELD in […]

That’s what non-dysphoric trans people feel when they figure out they’re trans.
